Felicia & David Taubenfeld
August 2, 1997
Chestnut Ridge, New York
It started off simply enough as an acceptance to spend the day with David, his wife Felicia, and their two children on New Year's Day 2005. My wife and my two daughters traveled the short distance between Rockland County, NY and Bergen County, NJ. While there we talked and shared a seemingly normal afternoon as friends.

This was to become one of the most dramatic days of all of our lives, yet we did not know it at the time. What I did not anticipate that day was David's zealous interest in my children's book, Lilies on the Moon, which was to be officially published April 1, 2005.

A publication date in publishing is a fictional date. Publishers have the books in hand several months in advance to send to reviewers and for pre-publication sales. So, I had a copy of my book with me. I never expected David to react the way he did. He immediately told me of a domain name he owned and how we could work together to publish books by unknown authors.

Within the next week, the emails started between David and me. His desire to get a business going was apparent. Then he mentioned that he had always wanted to be published, but didn't know how. I asked him if he was keeping a journal about his battle with brain cancer, to which he replied yes. I encouraged him to continue writing as we kept trying to get the business rolling.

At a certain point, as he forwarded the journals to me, it became obvious that he was in a losing battle against the cancer. I was honored and devastated at the same time. There was nothing I could do but pray for him, offer inspirational words and promise to keep his journal a secret.

David's wish was simple: if he lost his memory I was to locate his journal on his computer and publish it. He told me it was hidden and I knew where. As it turned out, I didn't need to locate it because he forwarded me everything anyway. Also, the journal was no secret to Felicia. David encouraged her in January to keep her own. In April she discovered his. I didn't find this out until October.

The business became a meaningless venture for me, yet I let David continue to pursue it as it seemed to keep his mind off the invading cancer. I was frantically organizing and saving all of his journals. Then came the inspirational speeches he delivered since he found out about the brain tumor in 2001. His words seemed not of this world.

Then the emails stopped.

David was gravely ill. Felicia told my wife about David's journal in October. I then visited David twice in his home in October 2005, shortly before he died. I brought with me everything David had sent me, printed out in paper format, and figured the time was appropriate to reveal David's "secret" to his family. More importantly, I spent quality time with the man who continues to lead me on a spiritual journey. I told him I loved him and he told me he loved me, too.

"Make It Happen" was the title suggested by his family and it was presented to him while he was coherent. He nodded his head in approval. It was what he would say when trying to make someone help him make something happen. It was his way of getting others in the mindset to make things happen...not to sit idly by and let life go by.

There is little doubt that when this book is completed and the reader has read the last page, another life will forever be changed because of David.

You will be inspired to change the way you live your life.

As David said: "Little by little, one good deed at a time, we can make the world a better place."
